Marriage License!

In order to get legally married, you absolutely can't forget the marriage license. We'd been putting it off a bit as I tried to research ways I could make it easier to change my name later (apparently in Nevada it's crazy challenging to make your maiden name your middle name--that may change with a new law starting January 1, 2018, but sadly too late for us). But ultimately we picked a day, both took off from work, and headed to the Marriage License Bureau downtown. I was slightly familiar with the area only because I'd taught a research skills session for a business class that was being held in the courthouse there. After I briefly contemplated a courthouse elopement that day (I had dressed up after all), we found the Marriage License Bureau, snapped a picture of the sign, and headed inside.

Unlike other government offices I've been to, the line at this one was fairly short, and everyone waiting seemed to be in good spirits (given the nature of their request), including the friendly clerks at the counters. Since we'd already pre-applied online, all we had to do to complete the process was show our IDs, correct any final changes, and sign our names.

Though definitely more modern, I still felt that old Normal Rockwell vibe in my tea-length white dress and white gloves (which I brought but didn't wear given the fact that I needed my fingers free). The process was quick, we snapped a few final pictures, and were advised to keep the paperwork together and apply for the actual marriage certificate at least 10 days after the wedding.

Then it was time to celebrate! I had planned long ago for our marriage license day to include a nice meal to commemorate the occasion as well, so I brought along the gift card bridal shower present from my bridesmaids to eat at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino's French restaurant: Mon Ami Gabi.

You don't understand--I've been waiting to eat at this restaurant since high school (it first opened in 1999, and I graduated in 2004). I still remember my classmates in Journalism raving about the food and atmosphere of Mon Ami Gabi for prom. While I'm sure eating during the day was slightly different than their evening prom experiences (no Bellagio fountain show but definitely lots of crowds), we got to sit outside in great weather, partake of steak, bacon, figs, bread, soup, mushrooms, and more, and were even treated to free champagne when they found out we were celebrating our marriage license day! The gift card covered our entire meal with $2 leftover!

It definitely made for some great photos and memories. The marriage license is one little thing to check off the wedding preparation list, but why not celebrate it? It's one little thing you can't get married without, and it means you're one step closer to actually being wed!

Mani-Pedi Ready

The wedding is officially SEVEN days away. That means that in one week (give or take a few hours), I will be a "Mrs." Exciting! Scary! Both! But in order to keep the big day from being too scary, I just have to make sure I'm prepared. That means perfecting our first dance choreography ( see next post ) and taking care of any final items that need to be done before the wedding. That means finishing the favors, printing the programs, and nailing my wedding-day nails look. I wish I could take credit for my new French tips, but I don't know the first thing about nail polish. My fiance's mom treated me to a mani-pedi (the second one I've ever had in my life and my first one with gels!) at The Nail Shoppe LV in town. I'm ready for ring shots!

An Engaged Wedding Guest

This post is partially about my own wedding preparations, but it's actually about a different wedding. This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the marriage of my fiance's cousin! It was a beautiful affair, and definitely a fun night, but it also made me realize how different it is attending a wedding when you're engaged compared to attending a wedding when you're not planning to get married yourself. First, when you're a guest at a wedding and a bride to be, you cry more. As the bride walks down the aisle and as the officiant talks about the meaning of love, you stroke your fiance's hand and look at him. You're both thinking the same thing: this will be us. You both feel that same love. You both imagine saying those same words. You both know yours is going to be forever too. During the reception, you take pictures of everything --from the guestbook table sign to the macaron party favors. You think, "I love that idea of having facts about the...

Say Yes to the Dress!

Of course I chose my wedding dress months ago. I had to, considering how long they typically take to come in. I wanted to plan a wedding in six months. That's apparently "last minute" in the wedding dress industry. I'm not even kidding--most wedding books and websites recommend purchasing the gown "nine months or earlier." As luck would have it, I received a call yesterday that my dress, ordered June 29 (just 17 days after I got engaged) had arrived! That still gives me two and a half months to get it fitted and finalized. The road to get here was a fun one (yay, playing dress up!), but certainly not an easy path. I think I may have even dodged a train wreck along the way: It started out with my initial dress shopping. Almost immediately after I got engaged in June I started visiting the local bridal shops I knew (Alfred Angelo and David's Bridal ) to schedule an appointment for trying on dresses. After waiting five years to get engaged, you ca...
